BFI-stop-motion-movie

The British Film Institute (BFI) has revealed the details for its upcoming season celebrating stop motion animation. It is titled “STOP MOTION: CELEBRATING HAND-CRAFTED ANIMATION ON THE BIG SCREEN“. The event runs from 1 August to 9 October 2024 at BFI Southbank and there will be free film screenings for children under 16.

Moreover, this major event is supported by headline partner LAIKA and it will showcase the unique artistry. It will also highlight the innovative techniques behind hand-crafted stop motion films.

Alongside the film season, the free exhibition “LAIKA: FRAME x FRAME” will run from 12 August to 1 October. It offers visitors an exclusive look at nearly one million handmade frames, puppets, sets, and never-before-seen artifacts from LAIKA’s productions. This includes a preview of their upcoming sixth film, “WILDWOOD” (2025).

The screening lineup includes iconic titles. The lineup features movies like KING KONG (1933), JASON AND THE ARGO­NAUTS (1963), CHICKEN RUN (2001). It also includes CORPSE BRIDE (2005), CORALINE (2009), FANTASTIC MR. FOX (2009), and ANOMALISA (2015). Filmmakers such as Henry Selick (Coraline) will participate in special events. Chris Butler and Sam Fell (ParaNorman) will also take part. Guillermo del Toro is joining these events. He is known for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. Peter Lord will also participate. He is associated with Chicken Run. Furthermore, Nick Park is taking part. He is famous for Wallace & Gromit. These include Q&As and conversations.

The talents

The season highlights British talents and classic shorts. Renowned animators include Suzie Templeton and Barry Purves. The programs feature work funded by the BFI Short Form Animation Fund and BFI NETWORK.

David Burke, Chief Marketing & Operations Officer at LAIKA, expressed pride in supporting the celebration. He emphasized the importance of connecting fans more deeply to LAIKA’s creative spirit. This was achieved through both the film screenings and the exhibition.

Justin Johnson, BFI Southbank Lead Programmer and curator of the season, emphasized the intricate artistry. He highlighted the craftsmanship involved in stop motion animation. He invited audiences to explore this captivating art form through screenings and special events.

Tickets for August screenings will go on sale starting 1 July for BFI Patrons. They will be available on 2 July for BFI Members. The general public can purchase them starting 4 July. Tickets for September and early October will be available beginning 5 August for Patrons. They will be available on 8 August for the public.
