Anna Antonelli’s debut feature turns a true-inspired story into a gripping genre film about control, identity and physical rebirth
Italian cinema rarely experiments with genre storytelling in a truly ambitious way, which is why Spyne immediately stands out as one of the most intriguing independent thrillers to emerge this year. Directed by Anna Antonelli in her feature debut after the short film Astrid, the movie combines espionage, psychological drama and physical survival into a narrative that constantly shifts between tension and introspection.
Themes
The title itself carries a double meaning: On one side, it evokes the world of spies and covert operations; When instead on the other, it directly references the spine and the devastating condition that transforms the life of the protagonist. This duality becomes the emotional and narrative core of the film.
Plot
Inspired by true events and written by Paolo Fittipaldi, Spyne follows Pierre, played by Stefano Cassetti, a former intelligence operative who has attempted to leave behind a dangerous past marked by missions in unstable territories. Like every classic thriller antihero, however, Pierre discovers that the past never truly disappears.
The story opens with a surreal and unforgettable sequence: one of Pierre’s former associates dies in Rome after being struck by a meteorite fragment while escaping mysterious pursuers. The unexpected nature of the event immediately gives the film a distinctive identity, mixing realism with near-fantastical tension. Rather than feeling absurd, the sequence creates curiosity and establishes the unpredictable tone that defines the entire movie.
Soon after learning about the incident, Pierre himself becomes the target of shadowy forces connected to secrets from his intelligence years. But the danger arrives in an even more devastating form. A sudden spinal condition causes him to lose control while driving, leading to hospitalization, coma and eventually tetraplegia. Confined to a clinic and trapped inside a body that no longer responds, Pierre faces a different kind of battle: surviving psychological collapse while trying to recover physically.
At this point, Spyne evolves into more than a conventional thriller. Antonelli explores the terrifying idea of losing control over one’s own existence. Pierre’s mind remains sharp, but his body becomes a prison, creating a constant tension between awareness and helplessness. The director handles this theme with remarkable balance, avoiding both melodrama and excessive sentimentality.
Alongside Pierre, there is Isa portrayed by Giorgia Fiori, whose performance adds emotional depth without ever overwhelming the darker atmosphere of the film. Supporting performances from Andrea Bruschi, Ivan Franek and the rest of the cast help reinforce the movie’s noir-inspired identity, giving every scene a believable sense of tension and ambiguity.
What makes Spyne particularly compelling is its ability to maintain two parallel dimensions at once. On the surface, it remains an espionage thriller filled with secrets, betrayals, hidden agendas and unexpected twists. Beneath that layer, however, lies a story about resilience, trauma and the fragile relationship between body and mind.
Antonelli demonstrates a confident visual style throughout the film, keeping the pacing controlled and the atmosphere consistently engaging. The thriller elements never overpower the human story, while the emotional arc never weakens the suspense. This balance is what ultimately makes Spyne feel fresh within the contemporary Italian cinematic landscape.
The recognition
The film has also received international recognition during the Cannes Film Festival. At the Italian Pavilion in Cannes, director Anna Antonelli was awarded the Golden Spike Award for the social commitment of the film, a recognition presented by the Social World Film Festival observatory for the movie’s exploration of disability, human dignity and personal resilience.
“Spyne” is produced by Creations Factory, meanwhile, Blue Eyes Films provides a worldwide distribution.
