The Hidden Review recently watched Awareness, the Prime Video original Spanish sci-fi feature film written by Ivan Ledesma and Daniel Benmayor, who also directs. The film stars Carlos Scholz as Ian, a teenage loner with extraordinary powers to project visual illusions.
A Complex Antihero
Ian transforms from a stereotypical isolated teenager into someone with a menacing, powerful presence. His desire for bigger payoffs from heists makes him somewhat unsympathetic at first. Although his powers could be used for good, he mainly uses them selfishly to survive.
Family Dynamics and Moral Lessons
Ian’s father, Vicente, portrayed with a deep, gravelly voice, is a likable figure who deeply loves his son. Vicente imparts a strict moral code, advising Ian not to draw attention or harm their family. This dynamic echoes mentor-student relationships like that of Harry Morgan and Dexter in the U.S. TV series Dexter.
Visual Storytelling and Symbolism
The film contrasts vast open water with constricted urban scenes during heists, instantly building tension. A mysterious arcade with haunting purple hues symbolizes power and ambition. The recurring photo of Ian’s mother, with her striking blonde hair contrasting with others, subtly hints at purity amid moral ambiguity.
Antagonists and Rising Stakes
Oscar Jaenada shines as the enigmatic Perceptor, whose sinister presence and cryptic dialogue heighten Ian’s inner conflict about right and wrong. As the story unfolds, Ian becomes more empathetic, displaying human vulnerability under the weight of newfound responsibilities.
Music and Sound Design
Director Daniel Benmayor skillfully uses music and sound, like the eerie tones accompanying Adrianna’s CCTV surveillance and a slow cover of Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds during a dream sequence. The song’s ironic lyrics underscore the tension while highlighting moments of hope.
Final Thoughts: Strong Performances Amidst an Ambiguous Story
While some scenes lack depth, the actors bring empathy, fear, and complexity to their roles. Awareness poses compelling questions about identity and morality but leaves some ambiguity that may frustrate viewers seeking clear-cut answers.
