The British Film Institute (BFI) unveils its first-quarter home entertainment slate, available for pre-order now globally. The highlights contain a new 4K restoration of Guillermo del Toro’s debut feature CRONOS. It also includes the inaugural volume of pioneering Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman’s work. Furthermore, there is ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT, the winner of the 2024 Cannes Grand Prix by Payal Kapadia.
January 20: Akira Kurosawa Classics on Blu-ray
BFI brings two Akira Kurosawa masterpieces to Blu-ray in the UK for the first time. HIGH AND LOW (1963) stars Toshiro Mifune in a gripping kidnap drama. It is based on Ed McBain’s novel and arrives ahead of Spike Lee’s remake.
STRAY DOG (1949), a taut crime thriller starring Toshiro Mifune as a detective pursuing a stolen firearm. Both editions feature exclusive new artwork by Matt Needle.
February 24: CRONOS and Chantal Akerman Retrospective
February brings a restored release of CRONOS (1992) in Limited Edition 4K UHD. The Blu-ray sets have been approved by Guillermo del Toro himself. The film is a landmark vampire movie. It stars Federico Luppi and Ron Perlman. It is essential in the canon of Mexican and horror cinema.
Also debuting is CHANTAL AKERMAN VOLUME 1: 1967-1978. It compiles groundbreaking films like Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975). This film was recently voted the greatest in Sight and Sound’s all-time poll. The compilation also includes News from Home (1976) and other seminal works. It comes complete with special interviews.
March 17: ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT and Kurosawa Double Feature
ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT will have its UK theatrical release on November 29, 2024. It arrives on Blu-ray/DVD in a Dual Format Edition. This evocative film is about three women navigating work, life, and friendship in modern Mumbai. It received critical acclaim and earned festival awards worldwide.
In March, YOJIMBO (1961) and SANJURO (1962) will be released together on 4K UHD and Blu-ray. These are iconic samurai creations of Akira Kurosawa. They star Toshiro Mifune. These classics influenced filmmakers such as Sergio Leone and Walter Hill.
Special Features and Collectible Booklets
Each release includes a curated selection of special features and, for first pressings, an illustrated booklet providing context and insights. Review copies will be made available roughly one month prior to release.
