The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and SciencesNicholl Fellowships programmes in Screenwriting is an international programme as it is dedicated to discovering emerging screenwriters. Besides, the program also focuses on nurturing these new talents.

In 2025, the programme will evolve to exclusively partner with global university programmes, at the same time, it will also work with screenwriting labs and filmmaker initiatives. Their goal is to select Nicholl fellows.

So, these partners will vet and submit scripts for consideration, while The Black List remains the public submissions portal. All partnered scripts will be reviewed by Academy members.

The goal

Howard Berger, Academy governor and president of the Academy Foundation Board, emphasises the goal to deepen relationships. These relationships are with educational partners worldwide. He is excited to collaborate with universities and labs known for nurturing exceptional emerging talent. This reinforces the Academy’s commitment to discovering new voices.

mentorship

Moreover, Nicholl fellowship receive mentorship from an Academy member during their fellowship year. At the same time, they participate in virtual seminars. They attend meet-and-greets with the Nicholl committee. Additionally to it, they join in-person networking events.

In fact, ongoing career support is provided through the Gold Alumni Program, offering continued professional growth.

Top 2025 programme partners include prestigious institutions. These include the American Film Institute, Columbia University, Sundance Institute, and the University of Oxford. Several others are included worldwide.

Partner submissions open in late July 2025 and close in late August. Fellows will be announced in spring 2026. Furthermore, each fellow is expected to complete a feature-length screenplay during their fellowship year. The Academy does not claim rights or commercial involvement with the submitted scripts.

The programme was founded in 1985 by Gee Nicholl in memory of her husband, Don Nicholl. It has awarded 186 fellowships to date. This achievement cements its status as a premier platform for launching screenwriting careers.
