The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the creation of the Janet Yang Endowment to Celebrate and Preserve Asian and AAPI Filmmaking. This initiative is part of Academy100, a global campaign to diversify revenue, expand the Academy’s international presence, and unite audiences through a shared passion for cinema. The endowment will permanently honor the legacy, influence, and contributions of Asian and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) filmmakers.

Funding from the endowment will support Asian and AAPI programming at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, as well as the acquisition and preservation of Asian and AAPI-related film materials within the Academy Collection. This tribute honors Janet Yang, the first Asian American president of the Academy, whose dedication to advancing diversity has helped pave the way for greater inclusion in entertainment and beyond.

Amy Homma, Academy Museum Director and President, said: “As a proud Asian American, it has been a privilege to serve alongside Janet Yang in support and celebration of Asian and AAPI filmmakers. This endowment expands the Academy’s decades-long efforts to preserve and share Asian cinema through public programs and exhibitions.” Janet Yang, Academy President, emphasized that as the Academy continues to grow globally, the endowment strengthens its connection with the international film community, including Asian and AAPI voices, and supports preserving international cinema and educating future filmmakers and film lovers.press.

To mark the launch, the Academy Museum will present Raising the Lantern: A Celebration of Chinese-Language Cinema, screening films from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan submitted for the Academy Awards International Feature Film category. On May 9, director Ang Lee will join Janet Yang for a live discussion following a 35mm screening of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), sourced from the Academy Film Archive. Prior to the screening, Gold House and the Academy Museum will co-host a reception honoring Yang’s legacy.

The Academy Museum advances the appreciation and preservation of cinema through inclusive exhibitions, programs, and collections, including Asian and AAPI film artifacts such as costumes from designer Eiko Ishioka, an Oscar acceptance speech by filmmaker Jessica Yu, a gallery devoted to martial arts icon Bruce Lee, and retrospectives on animation master Hayao Miyazaki and director Bong Joon Ho.
