In the 1980s and 1990s, Reiner reinvented himself in Los Angeles. He became one of the most reliable and versatile directors in American film. His movies helped define the cinematic landscape. These films range from the mockumentary brilliance of This Is Spinal Tap to the coming‑of‑age tenderness of Stand by Me. They include the fairy‑tale adventure of The Princess Bride and the psychological tension of Misery.

Moreover, he also created the courtroom fireworks of A Few Good Men, and crafted the romantic charm of When Harry Met Sally… for audiences across the U.S. and around the world.

Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, built a life together in Brentwood after marrying in 1989. They raised three children—Nick, Jake, and Romy—in their Los Angeles home. Michele, a photographer and producer, was his partner in life.

At the same time, she was also a creative influence, in fact, Reiner often credited her with inspiring the hopeful ending of When Harry Met Sally…. Their relationship blossomed during the film’s production.

A tragic death

First responders discovered their deaths at their Brentwood residence. Los Angeles authorities are investigating the case as a homicide. This adds a tragic coda to a Hollywood love story.
