A forgotten stash house. A room full of cash. And a team of cops who suddenly don’t know if they can trust each other. THE RIP – DIRTY MONEY is the new crime thriller directed by Joe Carnahan. It is led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The film lands exclusively on Netflix on January 16. Everything about it screams tension, paranoia, and bad decisions made under pressure.
A simple bust that changes everything
On carta, it looks like a routine win: a Miami police unit gets a tip, raids a rundown property and uncovers millions of dollars in cash hidden away. No victims, no shots fired, just a life-changing amount of dirty money sitting in front of them.
But the real story starts after the bust.
Once the money is on the table, the questions begin:
- Who called in the anonymous tip?
- Who decides what happens to the cash?
- And most importantly… who can you really trust?
As word of the seizure spreads beyond the walls of the precinct, outside forces – criminals, corrupt players, people with power and nothing to lose – close in. The team’s unity fractures, alliances shift, and everyone starts looking over their shoulder. What begins as a victory turns into a pressure cooker of suspicion, temptation and betrayal.
Damon & Affleck back in the fire
At the centre of all this are Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, back together in a story that leans into what they both do best: morally complicated men standing in the grey area between right and wrong. They’re supported by a stacked cast that brings real personality to the chaos:
Each character has something to gain – or everything to lose – from those millions. That’s where the film finds its real tension: not just in gunfights or chases, but in quiet looks, half-truths and choices that can’t be undone.
The team behind THE RIP – DIRTY MONEY
Behind the camera is Joe Carnahan, known for high-energy, muscular thrillers with sharp dialogue and a dark sense of humour. Here he writes and directs from a story. He co-created it with Michael McGrale. They lean into a classic premise – “found money.” They push it into a messy, human, 2026 kind of crime story.

Trust has a price
More than anything, THE RIP – DIRTY MONEY is about what happens when trust and money collide. It asks uncomfortable but timely questions:
- What would you do if you were standing in front of more cash than you’ll ever see in your life?
- Do you trust your colleagues as much as you think you do?
- And when the line between cop and criminal starts to blur, is there any way to walk it back?
As the story tightens and the circle of suspicion closes, it’s clear that not everyone will walk out clean. “Take what you can and get out” might sound tempting in today’s world. However, the film reminds us that dirty money doesn’t just stain your hands. It poisons everything around you.
