The HBO Original documentary FUKUSHIMA: A NUCLEAR NIGHTMARE, directed by James Jones (HBO’s “Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes”) and co-directed by Megumi Inman (“Atomic People”), debuts Tuesday, March 10 (9:00–10:40 p.m. ET/PT) on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. The feature-length film revisits one of the most terrifying modern disasters, focusing on the days when Japan stood on the brink of an unprecedented nuclear catastrophe.

A Tsunami, a Power Plant, and an Unthinkable Threat
In March 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake – the strongest ever recorded in Japan – triggered a massive tsunami that devastated the country’s northeast coast. Entire towns were wiped off the map. 20,000 lives were lost. An even greater threat emerged at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The giant wave disabled the cooling systems of three reactors. Radiation levels surged and hydrogen explosions ripped through the facility. Japan’s leaders faced the unimaginable possibility of evacuating Tokyo, the world’s largest city with 35 million people.
Nine Harrowing Days Reconstructed in Real Time
FUKUSHIMA: A NUCLEAR NIGHTMARE reconstructs the nine harrowing days following the disaster in forensic, real-time detail. The documentary moves from the control rooms of Fukushima Daiichi. There, engineers battled to prevent a total meltdown. It then shifts to the corridors of political power where leaders weighed the unthinkable. Finally, it shifts to the everyday lives of citizens caught in the fallout. By weaving together these perspectives, the film offers a comprehensive look at how close the world came to a far worse outcome.
The Fukushima 50: A Mission That Could Have Been Fatal
At the heart of the story are the power plant workers tasked with averting a major catastrophe. Under the command of Japan’s prime minister Naoto Kan, they were sent into a potentially suicidal mission to stabilize the reactors. These men, later known as the courageous Fukushima 50, navigated days of isolation, darkness, and terror. They faced mounting pressure as they entered the darkened reactor buildings. They were fully aware that their efforts to avert the worst might cost them their lives. For years, many of them stayed silent, burdened by guilt and stigma rather than celebrated as heroes. In the film, the control-room supervisor on duty when the disaster began, Ikuo Izawa, and others who were present in those nine fateful days recount their experiences publicly in detail for the first time.
Voices from the Front Lines and Behind the Scenes
The documentary features firsthand insight from Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant engineers, government advisors, American consultants, journalists, TEPCO officials, and emergency workers. Their testimonies reveal the technical challenges, the political tensions, and the human cost behind decisions made under extreme pressure, offering viewers a rare inside view of a crisis that captured the world’s attention.
