Barber-Shop-Chronicles

“One day. Six cities. A thousand stories” (Barber Shop Chronicles)

The Hidden Review recently attended Barber Shop Chronicles, written by Inua Ellams and performed at the Roundhouse in London, now available via National Theatre at Home. Ellams delivers a sharp, engaging play that transports audiences into barbershops spanning two continents.

A Unique Setting: Barbershops as Cultural Hubs

The vibrant environment of these barbershops becomes more than just a backdrop. Ellams uses this space expertly to raise questions and explore themes such as language, cultural tensions, and social boundaries. It offers a precious glimpse into black men’s culture and the complex dynamics within.

Brechtian Style and Narrative Weaving

Using a Brechtian approach, Ellams moves swiftly through the scenes, employing comedic archetypes and stereotypes to get straight to the core of each story. Although the barbershop experiences initially seem disconnected, his subtle writing gradually weaves them into a cohesive and engaging tapestry.

Language and Identity: Subtle yet Powerful

Language as a tool for identity is central to the play. Ellams poses profound questions about self-oppression when adopting the language of one’s oppressors—and how to escape that trap—all without being overt or preachy.

Performances: Standouts and Dynamic Characterisation

The performances are consistently strong. In particular, Fisayako impresses as Samuel, Wallace, and Timothy, effectively manifesting tension that builds and finally erupts in the final act. The cast’s ability to slip into multiple roles and playful caricatures enriches the fast-paced, entertaining experience.

Final Thoughts

While watching online sometimes diminishes the intense atmosphere and tension inherent to live theatre, Barber Shop Chronicles remains a must-watch. It is a vivid, insightful, and humorous portrayal that celebrates community, identity, and the shared moments that bond people across continents.
