The Hidden Review had the pleasure of watching Love is Blue. It was playing at The Drayton Arms Theatre from July 20th to 22nd. This occurred just before its appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Produced by LAMBCO Productions, this intimate two-hander explores the unlikely connection between a city trader and a young homeless man.
Plot and Characters: An Unexpected Bond
The story revolves around Olly, a successful yet grieving older man. He is a city trader who invites Aaron, a homeless young man, to his loft for a shower and food. As they open up about their troubled pasts, a complex relationship develops.
Olly struggles with the loss of his late boyfriend. Meanwhile, Aaron shares his difficult childhood. He was abandoned as an infant and raised in a strict religious foster home. The emotional depth of their conversations draws viewers into their growing friendship, mixing vulnerability with moments of hope.
Direction and Atmosphere
Director Prav MJ navigates the play’s emotional rollercoaster with style. They guide audiences through the evolving attraction and shared pain between the characters. Contemporary technology adds a modern touch. An example is Olly playing music via Alexa, which reinforces nostalgic memories of Olly’s past love in New York.
Performance Highlights
The acting is compelling throughout. Andrew Ewart shines as Aaron, perfectly balancing a streetwise edge with heartfelt introspection. Sam Walter’s portrayal of Olly is equally nuanced. He delivers powerful moments, such as breaking the fourth wall to speak to his deceased partner. Another significant moment is his moving memorial speech.
Final Thoughts: A Thoughtful and Original Play
Overall, Love is Blue is a beautiful and original theatrical piece. Despite its simplicity, it explores profound themes of grief, connection, and healing, making it a meaningful watch.
Love is Blue is now on at the The Drayton Arms Theatre.
