BFI Distribution and Break Out Pictures have partnered for a special release. They are unveiling Four Mothers, which is an Irish comedy-drama. It won the Audience Award for Best Feature at the 2024 BFI London Film Festival. The film will premiere simultaneously in cinemas across Ireland and the UK on April 4, 2025.
About the Film
Irish filmmaker Darren Thornton (A Date for Mad Mary) directed Four Mothers. He co-wrote it with his brother and co-writer Colin Thornton. It is a heartfelt and humorous adaptation of Gianni Di Gregorio‘s 2008 LFF winner Mid-August Lunch. The film is inspired by their own experiences with their mother. It tells the charming story of Edward, a novelist on the brink of success. He unexpectedly finds himself caring for four very different and eccentric mothers. This happens when his friends jet off for a Pride holiday in Spain.
Stellar Cast
The film stars James McArdle (Mary Queen of Scots, Mare of Easttown, Andor). It also stars Fionnula Flanagan (The Guard, Waking Ned Devine) and Dearbhla Molloy (Wild Mountain Thyme, Uncle Vanya). Newcomer Paddy Glynn and Stella McCusker (Five Minutes of Heaven, You, Me and Marley) are also in the film. Niamh Cusack makes a cameo as a medium. Iconic Irish drag performer Rory O’Neill, also known as Panti Bliss, plays a therapist.
Production Details
Eric Abraham, Jack Sidey, and Martina Niland produced the film under Port Pictures and Portobello Films & Television. Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland, The Common Humanity Arts Trust, mk2 Films, Coimisiún na Meán, and RTÉ supported the film. The acquisition was led by Break Out Pictures’ Robert McCann Finn and Nell Roddy, together with BFI’s Laura Dos Santos.
