The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the creation of a new annual competitive Academy Award® for Achievement in Stunt Design. It will debut at the 100th Academy Awards® for films released in 2027.
“Stunt design has been a vital part of filmmaking since the early days of cinema,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer. Academy President Janet Yang echoed this sentiment. “We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists. We congratulate them for their commitment and dedication. Their efforts have led to this momentous occasion.”
Details about eligibility and voting rules for the inaugural award will be announced in 2027. These details will be part of the full rules for the 100th Academy Awards. The Academy’s Board of Governors and executive leadership will determine the specific format of the award later. They will also decide on the presentation.
Over 100 stunt professionals currently belong to the Academy’s Production and Technology Branch, marking the significance of this long-awaited recognition.
The last new category introduced was Achievement in Casting. It was established in 2024 and first awarded at the 98th Academy Awards. This award honors films from 2025.
