The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a new annual competitive Academy Award® for Achievement in Stunt Design, debuting at the 100th Academy Awards® for films released in 2027. “Stunt design has been a vital part of filmmaking since the early days of cinema,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer, with Academy President Janet Yang adding that the Academy is proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists whose dedication has led to this milestone.
Details on eligibility and voting rules for the inaugural award will be announced in 2027 as part of the complete rules for the 100th Academy Awards®, while the Academy’s Board of Governors and executive leadership will determine the specific format and presentation of the new category.
More than 100 stunt professionals are currently members of the Academy’s Production and Technology Branch, underscoring the importance of this long-awaited recognition for the stunt community.
The last new category added to the Oscars was Achievement in Casting, created in 2024 and first presented at the 98th Academy Awards for films released in 2025, further expanding the Academy’s efforts to recognize key disciplines in filmmaking.
