Robert-Redford

From Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid to Ordinary People and the Sundance Film Festival, Robert Redford’s six-decade career left an indelible mark on film, activism and independent storytelling.

Robert Redford, born Charles Robert Redford Jr. on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California, was a true icon of American cinema. Over more than six decades, he captivated audiences around the world with his charismatic screen presence, thoughtful role choices and profound commitment to storytelling both in front of and behind the camera.

Breakthrough roles and acting legacy

Redford’s breakthrough came with Barefoot in the Park (1967), which showcased his effortless charm opposite Jane Fonda and established him as a major leading man of his generation. This success was followed by unforgettable performances in classics such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, The Great Gatsby and All the President’s Men, where he portrayed journalist Bob Woodward in the landmark political drama.

These films not only cemented his status as a box office star, but also defined an era of American cinema, blending movie-star glamour with intelligence, wit and moral complexity.

Oscar-winning director and Sundance founder

Beyond acting, Redford made a powerful impact as a director. With Ordinary People, he won the Academy Award for Best Director, delivering a nuanced, emotionally devastating family drama that confirmed his talent behind the camera.

He also fundamentally changed the landscape of independent film by founding the Sundance Film Festival. What began as a small showcase grew into one of the world’s most important platforms for independent filmmakers, launching countless careers and championing bold, risk‑taking voices that might otherwise have gone unheard.

Activism, environmentalism and philanthropy

Off-screen, Robert Redford was known for his environmental activism and philanthropy. He used his influence to advocate for conservation, climate awareness and Indigenous rights, supporting organizations and initiatives devoted to protecting wilderness and amplifying underrepresented communities.

His grace, humility and quiet determination made him not just a movie star, but a respected public figure whose values were reflected in his work and his life.

Farewell to a legend

Robert Redford passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, at the age of 89, at his home in Sundance, Utah. His absence is deeply felt across the film industry and among generations of audiences who grew up with his work.

Yet his legacy endures: in the films he starred in and directed, in the filmmakers nurtured by Sundance, and in the ongoing impact of his advocacy.

Thank you, Robert Redford, for a life that reshaped cinema, expanded what independent film could be, and sparked creativity and conscience for generations to come.
