The Hidden Review team watched Episode 5 titled “Shock Jock” of Stranger Things 5: Volume 2. It is the second chapter of a trilogy. This trilogy leads to the final volume of a story spanning more than a decade. A series that has rightfully become one of the most ambitious and expensive television productions ever made.

Here is the review of episode 5: Shock Jock.

volume 1 recap

Volume 1 consists of four episodes. It ends with a plot twist that is both unexpected and long hoped for. This twist further fuels fans’ curiosity: how will it all end? What new ideas will those kids come up with next? They are no longer children. They have accompanied us throughout our own journey of growth. And above all, how will they face Vecna and his monsters?

Before diving into Volume 2, it’s worth recalling where we left off. The group begins its dangerous journey by meeting Eleven, who gradually becomes an integral part of the team alongside Max. Together, they face and defeat the creatures controlled by Vecna, also known as Henry.

Meanwhile, the group expands to include Hopper (David Harbour), Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder), Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton), Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer), Eddie (Joseph Quinn), Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher), Derek Turnbow (Jake Connelly), Erica Sinclair (Priah Ferguson), Lucas Sinclair’s sister (Caleb McLaughlin). Their storylines increasingly intertwine. This leads them to confront Billy, Max’s brother. Billy has been overtaken by the powers of the Mind Flayer and Vecna.

volume 2

The story of Season 5 – Volume 2 picks up exactly where we left off, focusing on Will, who fully discovers his powers only after killing the Demogorgons. Since his friends started calling him “the wizard,” Will works alongside his hopes, friends, and mother. They search for a concrete solution to stop Vecna. They do this through a carefully devised plan.

From Volume 1, we know that Vecna has managed to kidnap twelve children. He defines them as tools essential to his primordial and evil plan. Hopper, Eleven, and her sister are in the Upside Down trying to find the rest of the group—Dustin, Steve, Nancy, and Jonathan—who were trapped there after the incident.

At the same time, those same characters are attempting to find a way to defeat Vecna by destroying the source of his powers, heading toward the place where everything began: the laboratory where the experiments took place.

Moreover, Olly, Max, and Derek set a plan in motion to escape and warn the others. Max and Olly travel through memories and visions in search of a way out, while Derek acts as bait to distract Vecna. It is Will who ultimately manages to counter him, saving their lives.

However, the problems are far from over as Eleven’s sister reveals unexpected truths about her past, while Nancy and Jonathan recklessly open a new gate. Fortunately, Dustin discovers a set of notes that prove crucial, helping the group reorganize their search and adapt a new plan.

the duffer brothers

Once again, the Duffer Brothers demonstrate their ability to create powerful settings and atmospheres, weaving the characters together in increasingly compelling ways. The narrative leaves room for suspense and unanswered questions which, thanks to well-paced storytelling, allow the young protagonists to develop meaningful character arcs, guiding them toward the maturity we are expected to see by the end of the series.

themes

The central themes remain friendship and love, which for many characters—and for certain couples in particular—evolve into the idea of sacrifice for the other, a fundamental and essential element of any authentic relationship.

visual effects

The visual effects continue to be impressive and well integrated, as in previous episodes, supported by a solid, multi-layered screenplay that stimulates the imagination without ever losing coherence.

From a narrative standpoint, it is interesting to note how the inciting incident is clearly established in the first four episodes, while these three episodes of Volume 2 function as the true second act of the story’s narrative arc, leading toward the climax and setting up the final resolution in Volume 3—a conclusion that, for now, remains shrouded in mystery.
