“You die, I die” (Gaten Matarazzo & Joe Keery, Stranger things)
The Hidden Review team has watched the seventh episode of Stranger Things 5 – Volume 2 is titled “The Bridge.” It stands out as one of the most revealing episodes of the season. It uncovers multiple narrative layers. The episode also highlights intertwined storylines.

Between reality, the Upside Down, and new worlds
Max and Holly awaken from the trance induced by Vecna. Max finds herself in the hospital. Lucas is by her side. She was saved from the Demogorgons hunting her under Vecna’s control. Holly, on the other hand, wakes up in a new reality, leaving fans wondering whether she is no longer in the Upside Down but rather in an entirely new world, closely connected to Vecna’s presence.
Seizing the opportunity, Holly attempts to escape and discovers a portal in the ground that involuntarily launches her from the sky of the Upside Down, sending her crashing down toward Nancy. At that moment, Nancy is with Steve, Dustin, and Jonathan on the roof of the Hawkins laboratory. They are still within the Upside Down. Unfortunately, Holly is once again overtaken by Vecna’s powers and dragged back into his lair.
The group reunites and a plan takes shape
Meanwhile, Mr. Clark, Erica, and Murray manage to find a way to reach Dustin in the Upside Down. With him, they also reach the rest of the group. This leads to a long-awaited reunion between those in Hawkins and those trapped in the Upside Down. They regroup at their radio station headquarters. There, they devise the definitive plan to defeat Vecna.
This is where Will needs an honest conversation. He desires an emotional confrontation with his loved ones and closest friends. Fully aware of the impact Vecna has had on him, he decides to open up and come out.
Acceptance and awareness
To his surprise, Will realizes that the group loves him even more—not because he has freed himself from an inner burden, but because he has always been accepted for who he is, even before anyone truly understood what he was feeling.
The themes explored across these three episodes—friendship, brotherhood, redemption, confession, teamwork, and above all awareness—all converge toward resolving the narrative threads, making the characters stronger and more prepared for the final battle awaiting them, both in the Upside Down and in the new world Vecna is attempting to merge with Earth.
Standout performances
Among the standout performances are Sadie Sink (Maxine) and Nell Fisher (Holly Wheeler). Both actresses showcase a compelling on-screen bond throughout Season 5, strengthening the narrative impact of the story and creating two character arcs that naturally intersect.
At the same time, Gaten Matarazzo and Joe Keery highlight a relationship that grows deeper than ever before. Through redemption and confessions, they reveal how essential their bond is to the heart of the story.
The real-life relationship between Charlie Heaton and Natalia Dyer clearly shines through in their portrayal of Jonathan and Nancy, who continue to fight for their love despite the circumstances, delivering emotions that resonate deeply and emphasizing the importance of compromise in any meaningful relationship.
Last but certainly not least, Noah Schnapp delivers a genuine and emotionally resonant performance. He brings heartfelt authenticity to a character who has long struggled with loneliness, achieving an exceptional level of empathy through emotions that strongly connect with today’s generation.
Overall, the entire cast once again demonstrates how effectively these characters can be developed within the complex and demanding circumstances created by the Duffer Brothers.
Will, Vecna, and the power of fear
Although Will’s coming out may feel predictable—having been foreshadowed in previous seasons, first during his conversation with Mike on the drive back from California and later in a private moment with Jonathan—it remains a crucial step in his personal journey. It is a necessary moment for confronting the insecurities fueled by Vecna, who draws strength from the fears of others.
Only through this acceptance can Will truly become the “wizard” he is meant to be, ready to face his most dangerous enemies, including Vecna and the Mind Flayer.
Trauma, origins, and inspiration
The suspense and twists—particularly the revelations surrounding Henry’s trauma—add further depth to the narrative. Actions carry weight on the characters’ consciences, and Henry’s first murder—the killing of the scientist in the cave—marks the point of no return that shapes him into what he becomes.
Across these seven episodes, the Duffer Brothers once again demonstrate how to craft a layered and compelling work of fiction. Notably, Stranger Things draws inspiration from the legend of the Montauk Project. It suggests an unsettling parallel between the events of the series and real-life occurrences in the United States. These theories are rooted in actual events.
The show’s cinematography and production design faithfully reflect the message. They capture the ’80s-inspired aesthetic envisioned by the Duffer Brothers and Shawn Levy. This reinforces the powerful connection between atmosphere, storytelling, and collective memory.
